How To: Golf Course Rainwater Harvesting Part 2

See Part 1 of this series here.
...Now that’s all nice to see annual totals, but if we want to invest in the infrastructure to use this resource of ours wisely then we are going to have to get specific. The best way to do this is to find out exactly how much of this water you are going to use.

Part 2: How can I tie it in to my current system or maintenance routines?
To answer this question let's break it down into three parts: collection, storage and delivery.



Collection Method
Here we evaluate the effectiveness of 4 things - Material, Delivery, Climate and Other:

Material of roof
  • Is the roof constructed of standing seam metal, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EDPM), slate or tile? (different materials have different runoff coefficients i.e. metal is .95, concrete and asphalt is .9, tar and gravel is .8-.85)
  • Is the roof or exterior building walls capable of withstanding load or attachment of a "delivery system" (see below)?

How To: Golf Course Rainwater Harvesting Part 1

For golf courses using municipal water sources (roughly 14% in USA) or a limited renewable source for irrigation, collecting roof rainwater may have considerable benefits. Harvested rainwater can later be used to supplement landscape applications in isolated areas, for young planted material, the growing of nursery stock, bunker surrounds and heavily stressed turfgrass. Whatever your intended use, when evaluating the possibility of collecting rainwater from a roof for the purpose of holding and applying there are 3 major things to consider:
  1. How much can I collect? (Supply)
  2. What is the impact on my maintenance routines? (Collection, Storage & Demand)
  3. How do I deliver? What is my ROI?

Getting to the Green: Improving Golf Cart Efficiency Part 2

In Part 1 I discussed some of the major differences between Gas Vs. Electric Carts, In part 2 I've revealed some Tips and Tricks for increasing the overall efficiency of your carts. These can assist in lowering operating costs and enable your course to keep prices attractive to golfers, while widening your profit margins. Here are a few things to consider when trying to cut down expenses and improve performance:


Stimp My Ride - We all know the importance of lowering ball rolling resistance on playing surfaces, but why not with our carts too? Rolling Resistance (RR) explains energy depletion through tires over a distance and is influenced by tires and driving surface characteristics.

Many different tire factors influence the RR such as:
• Tire shape, tread pattern, depth, size and a softer tire as a higher RR than harder compounds.
• Higher air pressure in the tire generally reduces RR, recommended PSI is usually between 18-25, check tire
wall and do not over-inflate.
• Environmental conditions such as higher ambient temperature, rain, snow or wind all influence RR.

The surface texture of driving surfaces influences RR and fuel consumption by as much as 12 percent on paved driving surfaces, and far greater on turf, gravel and sand. Concrete cart paths are more energy intensive to install then gravel and asphalt, but allow for less RR against tires . Also, rain events have been known to greatly reduce cart revenue on courses without a well-designed cart path, but, of course, the drawback is that under “cart path only” rules, USGA studies show rounds can take longer than walking with a pull cart on the fairways, but at least you’ve got golfers while it’s raining.

Hack Your Cart - There are some fantastic aftermarket kits available to help make better use of your energy, and even generate it. For instance, hybrid kits are available for gas carts that enable a quieter electric drive mode for when passing golfers on the green, or they can be used as a generator to run power tools such as electric drills while out in the field. The PowerPod Kit will be available starting in November 2011 throughout North America.

Adding solar panel roofs to electric golf carts has become quite trendy. In Toronto (not best for solar) panels boosted the electrical input to an amount equivalent to 12 percent of consumption . When the carts were recharged at night however, this 12 percent benefit was reduced to between 7 and 10 percent due to efficiency losses inherent in the charging process. The average return on investment is between 3 and 10 years, depending on government rebates, your current cost of electricity and the amount of sunlight and energy you can generate. Solar panels (hard tops and peel-and-stick) are available through many golf cart distributors, and most manufacturers have or will be releasing models in the near future with built-in photovoltaic cells. Kick It Route Down - Tripcalculator.org is a free Web app that will help put a dollar value on the route you choose. Obviously, there are significant variables not taken into account here, including RR of driving surface, topography and driver behavior, but it’s a good start to help understand where corners can be cut on your more popular driving routes.

Scribblemaps Review


The free website Scribblemaps.com allows users to scribble, draw, measure distances and areas and place markers, pictures and videos on Google Maps. Yes you can do this with Google MyMaps, but you'll see a number of incredibly useful features not found on MyMaps.

Recently Turfhugger arranged for some Golf Management related icons/map markers to be made (Thanks to RHo Solutions and Rueben Butterfield, President of the Irrigation Industry Association of BC) that reflect the major environmental infrastructure of your typical golf course. Turfhugger has recently donated these markers for use on Scribblemaps  (Thanks to Jonathan of Scribblemaps!) ...Results? A truly useful way to manage your projects with accuracy, communicate current projects in an easy to understand and accessible format.

I'm a true believer of the importance of communication through maps, and therefore Turfhugger is commited to creating new map markers to help golf course superintendents communicate their pest, tree, habitat, water and legal obligations.

Turfhuggers Efforts Covered on TurfNet

John Reitman of TurfNet recently covered our efforts to create map markers for use in Scribblemaps free online mapping program. I've posted some article snippets below with a few extra notes. Thanks John.

“I am able to mark particular trees, attach photos of the trees and the work that needs to be done,” Phipps said. “Then I can send the map to my arborculturist, who can go in and give me an estimate without ever coming here.” 

Another Way Northland Country Club is Using Scribble Maps

We groom x-country ski trails for our members during the winter months. Another way I have used scribble maps is to map our ski trails.



I laid out the two main trails on the map. The full loop is shown in blue and measures 4.71km or 2.92 miles. The inner loop is shown in green. This loop starts from the maintenance building and loops around the inner part of the course. This loop is 2.8km or 1.73 miles. Of course there are any number of different routes you can create on our series of trails. If you like to blaze your own trail you can use scribble maps to map your route. The program is web based and is free at www.scribblemaps.com.

Scribble Maps at Northland Country Club

The site is very useful in many many ways. Currently I am mapping out all of our playing surfaces, which gives me incredibly accurate area measurements of these surfaces. More on this in a later post.

For the purpose of introducing the post, today I mapped out the snowshoeing route I took around the golf course today. Using the features I was able to draw my route on the map and get the exact distance I traveled on my snowshoes. Much more on this site in the coming days including a full map of NCC's x-country ski trails. For now enjoy playing around with the site yourself.

Scribble Maps Review: Part 2


There seems to be a lot of excitement about the possibilities of Scribble Maps for golf course management, so I decided to contact Jonathan Wagner, Co-founder of Scribble Maps, to help answer some of your q's and provide a bit of guidance.

Scribble Maps Review Part 1

I just became familiar with this new tool a couple weeks ago through Scott Morrison @Turfhugger and have already found some pretty good uses for it. Below is the map of the golf course with little green paddles pointing to specific trees that are in need of pruning. I am going to use this map as a work order and to collaborate with my arborist on how I want the job handled. If you click on the small square in the top right corner the map it will expand to the size of your monitor. From there you can click and drag the map around to where ever you want. When you  click on a paddle, a photograph of the tree will pop up and you will be able to see first hand on what needs to be done. I hope by doing this it will save time and hopefully money by enabling my arborist to make cost estimates remotely.

Use of Ortho-infrared Imaging To Evaluate Irrigation Practices By David Phipps, Superintendent at Stone Creek Golf Club

We have been concerned for the heath of some of our large fir trees around the course and the county decided to employ some of the technology that they have used for evaluating their forest land. They hired a company called Eagle Digital which flew over the golf course and took a number of orthographic images.



iPhone Apps For Golf Course Superintendents

While many criticize Apple’s products for their limited keyboard options, iJunkies reply “just turn it in to landscape mode”. Other points of criticism include lack of customizable themes, basic camera and Apps are only available through iTunes. Despite what hang-ups you have over Apples products, you can’t argue against their durability and lightweight making them not get in the way, and sometimes that’s the best feature of all. Apple has done a great job promoting its App’s as they do have the largest collection of all the smart-phones… for now.

Android as a Supers Tool

Not limited by design features meant to preserve brand identity, Android is an Operating System (OS) adopted by major smartphone manufacturers such as Motorola, HTC, Samsung and LG. Created by Google, the Android OS can be found in phones and tablets that resemble iconic BB’s and Apple designs, mash-up designs (i.e. flat-screen with slide-out keyboard), and new concepts altogether like dashboard computers in cars. Imagine what a stock Android OS could do for a mower or sprayer; fuel conservation and the IPM reporting process would be made effortless.
